1612:
Jennet was 9 years old in 1612 when her testimony at – what later became known as the Pendle Witch Trials – sent her mother, brother, and sister to the gallows, all accused of witchcraft.
After the trial Jennet finds herself poor, alone, young, but already deemed a spinster. We follow her story as Jennet struggles to find meaning set against the harsh reality of 17th Century England.
Present Day:
Jane, a travel journalist, is recovering from an operation. Her partner is as usual, nowhere to be seen.
With a failing marriage and a somewhat dead-end job, Jane no longer knows what she wants or who she is. Nor does she have the energy to escape her damaging relationship.
After another fight with her partner, and through a chance work visit to Lancaster Castle, Jane stumbles upon the Witches Tower.
Going down a rabbit hole of research, Jennet’s life starts to echo in the present through Jane. Like Jennet, Jane feels trapped and powerless.
And as Jane begins to unravel Jennet’s remarkable story of survival, she discovers the way forward in her own life is by embracing the true nature of a woman’s power.
