Pumpkin, the naughtiest little puppy in the world is an adorable little character onto which children can project all their pent-up puppy yearnings and love. He is both adventurous and vulnerable so the young reader is enthralled by his escapades but fears for his safety and wants to protect him from the scary adult world.
In ‘A nice quiet day’ we see Freddy and Rose begging their parents to get them a dog. Eventually Mummy and Daddy reluctantly capitulate and before long the children fall in love with a timid Pumpkin-coloured puppy in the austere rescue-dogs facility.
No sooner does the family return home than Pumpkin runs away and embarks on an extravagantly dramatic and hair-raising adventure which leaves him cold, wet and desperate to return home to his new adoptive family.
He is safely delivered to the house by the emergency services and a crowd of angry people who have had their day ruined by Pumpkin’s antics, but will Mummy and Daddy allow him to stay or return him to the dog’s home in disgrace?
The story has a nail-biting climax and a heart-warming conclusion, but begs the question…whatever will Pumpkin get up to next?
