Everyone has heard of ‘Pavlov’s Dog’, but few know the real human (and canine) story behind it – the tale of a complex and divisive character, navigating the growth of an industrial-scale animal experiment programme, through a maelstrom of scientific controversy, personal tragedy, and political upheaval.

In the graphic novel PAVLOV AND THE KINGDOM OF DOGS we experience the strange and riveting story of the Russian scientist who set out to study the laws of digestion but accidentally ended up revolutionising psychology - Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936).

Matthew Adams is an academic psychologist based at the University of Brighton, UK. His recent research focuses on human-animal and human-nature relations, especially in contexts of crisis, and he has written numerous academic journal articles and multiple books. He also regularly writes shorter form pieces for non-academic audiences on platforms such as The Conversation and The Psychologist. A recent Arts and Humanities Research Council Fellowship enabled him to write a script with editorial input, recruit an illustrator, and produce a draft of the graphic novel Pavlov and the Kingdom of Dogs. PAVLOV is his collaboration with acclaimed illustrator Sophie Burrows.
